Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that spread from person to person through sexual contact. STIs cause serious health problems and often require treatment to cure the infection or prevent it from spreading.

This is to help find out if you’re at risk for infection and determine the right type of testing for you. You’ll usually have a urine or blood test and/or swab of genital fluid samples. For women, this may involve a pelvic exam, and for men, a swab of the tip or inside of the penis.

Depending on your risk factors, you might also need to have a lumbar puncture to test for syphilis and other advanced-stage genital infections. Doctors may take a sample of your urine or blood in their office, or they might send it to a lab. They can also provide you with a kit to test yourself at home. At-home testing is often cheaper than going to the doctor’s office and may be more convenient for some people.
